Santa Claus TrackerApparently, back in the 1950's there was a Sears store that was running an ad targeted at young children. The ad welcomed children to give Santa a call on a special phone number that Sears had set up. But alas, there was a slight mistake in the printing. The phone number on the ad was actually the direct line to Director of Operations at the Continental Air Defense! The Colonel who answered the first call from a little boy wanting to give Santa Claus his list evidently didin't find it too amusing. But, after speaking with another young caller's mother and figuring out what had happened, he told the rest of his staff to go ahead and give Santa's position to any other children who called in. A few years later the US and Canada decided to combine each of their national domestic air defenses into what we now know as NORAD. But the tradition continued nonetheless and still does to this day. Now it's managed by volunteers and has become very popular amongst major media outlets as well as children every Christmas. Each year on December 1st NORAD starts a new Santa Claus Tracker that is viewable online. They handle thousands of calls and e-mails as Santa is tracked all over the world via their radar. There are frequent updates and the website is interactive as well, giving information on the different countries and such. If you have young children, it's definitely something to share with them! |
